Chairman's Corner

When we can get them to write one, a message or coverage of upcoming or past events will be posted. It is also planned to have this page as a sounding board for requests, ideas, and discussions.

May 2005

Again another year is winding down and the needs keep cropping up - especially for members willing to volunteer to serve as officers and directors over the Trans-Pecos SPE Section. 2004-2005 has been a very successful term in providing emerging technologies and dissemination of knowledge to our and other section members along with visitors to presentations.

The Scholarship Golf Tournament was very successful in enabling the TP-SPE Section to raise sufficient funds in continuing its endeavors to provide scholarships to deserving students seeking to become engineers in this profession.

Coordinating the visits of Distinguished Lectures to the Permian Basin and Trans-Pecos SPE Sections in sharing the events has enabled a better function for both the attendees and the lecturers as well.

The Permian Basin Onshore Technical Conference was one of the best ever presented - on value received. This shared function of both the Permian Basin and Trans-Pecos SPE Sections is an important part of the Permian Basin International Oil Show. Hopefully, a way to enable a better coverage on this important and meaningful event can be developed.

Interested individuals should contact Matt Lippman, Toby Shahan, Jeff Harris, or Prentice Creel if they desire to serve on an office. Its one of the best ways to get the most out of the SPE association.

Dedication to enhancing the coverage and involvement of our Young Members (under 35) in serving and attending the SPE functions was sought. Plans are to continue this endeavor and its importance to the SPE.

2004-2005 Session Board and Chairs thank all and hope the opportunity to enhance and improve their profession of engineering was obtained.

May 2004

Greetings to all. I want to thank everyone that helped make our annual scholarship golf tournament a great success again this year. This year’s tournament was sold out early. There were a total of 74 teams playing in the morning and afternoon flights. I’m sorry to report that no one got a hole-in-one to win the 2004 Dodge pickup. I only missed it by 30 feet or more.

There was plenty of great food and beverages on the course and as always we thank the food sponsors for providing their time and talents. Thanks to this years sponsors. These sponsors are listed on the Tournament section on TPSPE.org. Special thanks to Melinda Bujnoch and Toby Shahan for their dedicated hard work in putting this years tournament together. The tournament netted $12,345.00 for our continued scholarship commitments.

We have one final meeting for this SPE year. It will be held at the Odessa Country Club on Thursday, May 13 at 11:30 AM. Our speaker, Hoxie Smith is the Director of Midland College’s Petroleum Geotechnology Training Center. The topic will be “New TBPE Continuing Education Requirements and Midland College’s Role with the Oil and Gas Industry”. This meeting should be very informative for those wanting to become a licensed Professional Engineer in Texas.

Another item on the agenda will be the nomination and election of next years Trans-Pecos SPE Board of Directors. The section needs new blood on the BOD. If you want to get involved with making the Trans-Pecos Section grow and become even better, call or email any of the current officers listed on this website.

Please make plans to attend the 2004 Permian Basin Onshore Technology Conference (PBOT). The PBOT BOD’s are working hard to put together an interesting as well as informative schedule of events. Information will be kept current on the tpspe.org website.

March 2004

A Reminder - One of our goals for this year is to increase participation from the membership in the sections business. I want to invite you to sign-up and help with the many projects the section is committed to. Look over the list and if you want to make a difference, sign up.

UTPB Regional Science Fair  [March]                        Judges gave out 3 awards to Senior Division & 1 award to an Intermediate Division student for Special Awards
Permian Basin Onshore Technical Conference        October 19-20, 2004 - Committees meeting

Please contact any board member to get involved with YOUR Section’s Activities.

Another goal is to add new members to our section. If you bring a non-member to a monthly meeting and they submit an application for membership, your meal will be free. SPE International also is offering several incentives for recruiting new members. To find out what they are, go to spe.org.

And finally, it is past time to renew your membership dues. If you have not done this, you can go to the SPE Website and pay online. How much easier can it be. Don’t put off volunteering, your contribution will be measurable and appreciated.

All the best for 2004,

Jeff Harris

Message from the Chairman - 2003-2004:

As chairman for this year, my goal will be to get more involvement from our membership in the section's business.  Many of us have been active in several positions year after year.  Some of our officers have served multiple positions and due to necessity, repeated the following year. We have three new officers this year and hopefully, this trend will continue.

Membership is another goal this year. We will have lost several members due to the ConocoPhillips move to Houston.  I would like to see a push to recruit new or old members to join our section.  We have a lot to offer those that have a volunteering spirit.
