The position of Southwest North America Regional Young Professional Coordinator assigned for the term 2008-2010.

Troy Kelly, Reservoir Engineer with Kinder Morgan CO2 Company has accepted this position and will begin providing information and coverage that is being developed and shared by other regional and section Young Professional Committees. This is proposed to be a two year term position.

This is a position that will provide the SWNA Region communication and functionality for the under 35 SPE members of our region. Troy can help provided SPE guidance and planning in the future concerning the needs and desires of its Young Professionals. This position would not replace any Troy is currently serving on with the Permian Basin SPE Section.

The Regional Coordinator would be responsible for communications and developments for supporting it’s under 35 members. Development of ideas and sharing these with other YP coordinators around the globe would be a valuable experience for Troy. The Region consists of sections in Austin, San Antonio (Balcones), Midland (Permian Basin), Odessa (Trans-Pecos), Lubbock (South Plains), Hobbs, Amarillo, Wichita Falls (North Texas), Farmington (Four Corners), and Socorro-Roswell. There would be a link to the Universities with SPE Chapters in this Region as well – Texas Tech University, The University of Texas, New Mexico Tech, & The University of The Permian Basin.

We are requesting your support for Troy in bringing this coordination together.

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin began offering classes in areas such as production, drilling, formation evaluation and natural gas handling in the fall of 2006. As part of the industrial technology degree, students can earn an accredited bachelor’s degree with a concentration of courses in petroleum related subjects.

This first semester has seen rapid growth in enrollment and a strong interest from the community and industry in the program. A student chapter of the SPE has been started on the campus, labs have begun to be equipped for classroom and research use, a building renovation is in the works, and the PETEX facility is being refurbished.

The position of Southwest North America Regional Young Professional Coordinator was assigned for the term 2006-2007.

Jeanette Ontiveros, Petroleum Engineer with Halliburton accepted this position and provided information and coverage that was being developed and shared by other regional and section Young Professional Committees. This was a two-three year term position but may be shortened or lengthened based on the individual’s desires.

This is a position I believe the SWNA Region needed in order to develop the communication and functionality that could be possible with the under 35 SPE members of our region. Jeanette helped provide SPE guidance and planning in the future concerning the needs and desires of its Young Professionals. This position was not a replacement of any Jeanette was currently serving on with the Permian Basin SPE Section.

The Regional Coordinator would be responsible for communications and developments for supporting it’s under 35 members. Development of ideas and sharing these with other YP coordinators around the globe would be a valuable experience for Jeanette.

Currently, there are ideas on how to precede with the Young Professional groups all over the world.  The current developed sections and regions in other areas have offered to assist and give support to Jeanette in this endeavor.

This position along with the Regional PEEC Coordinator held by Billy Harris, Wagner & Brown gives the region a great resource to accomplish future visions with the public’s understanding and our youth’s education on the industry we work in and to give our young professionals a communication and networking connection for their future growth.

Science Week in Midland

Jeff Harris, Permian Basin Region Tech for coiled tubing, participated in Earth Day at the local Burnett Elementary School in Midland, Texas. The local Society of Petroleum Engineers was asked if it could participate in Earth Day with the area schools. Jeff, an avid participant/leader in SPE, did an excellent job in discussing how Nitrogen(N2) is the major part of the air we breath and gave a few demonstrations on how N2 reacts with other objects. He demonstrated that in a liquid state it can be handled safely and effectively, as well as how we use N2 in the oil industry. He pointed out that BJ Services was a responsible company that spends a lot of effort and money in Health, Environment and Safety. BJ is a leader in keeping our environment on Earth clean for all of us, now and in the future. Jeff was a hit with the students as they were excited and participated with many questions. He was invited to come again.
